A trek to Puligundu Hills

Puligundu Hill is a  twin rock formation with a height of 1000 feet situated in Chitoor district, Andhra Pradesh. There is a small Shiva temple is at the hilltop.

A lot of tourism development activities are happening around this place by the government. Roads are being laid and APTDC hotels are available at the base of the hill.

Beautiful ride through well laid village roads

We saw  more Bilkers and local college students and trekkers during other months and can be considered as a picnic spot with some fun and thrilling trekking experience. The distance from Chennai to Puligundu is around 150 Kms. One can travel from Chennai on the Tirupathi Road via Red Hills, Periyapalayam, Uthukkottai and cross the border. Nagalapuram waterfalls is en route to Puligundu. Another waterfalls Kailasakona is also on the way to Puligundu. If you are coming from a different part of Chennai, you can take an alternate route via Nagari

The twin rocks standing tall upon us. We could spot the iron bridge connecting the two hills from a distance. We stopped and started clicking some pictures. The hill was to our right and we were looking for an entrance and ended up near the APTDC Hotel at Puligundu. The person there directed us towards a muddy elevated road along the hill and told us that we can ride the bike in that route to get to the base of the hill. We realized only after reaching the destination that we reached it from the backside and there is a proper road being made from the other end. There were few bikes already parked there. We parked our bikes under a tree, put our caps on and proceeded right away to the hill.

After climbing some stairs, there were some shrines present in an area which is flat that can accommodate more people to gather at that place. The path to the stairs is through a ridge protected by iron rods on the side for safety. Anyone with a sane mind can walk through it safely although you can see how deep one can take a fall.

The trek to this hill is not a tough one. But the path is very narrow that only one person can go. The stairs are present right in the center of the hill. Sunlight enters for only halfway of the path and it gets darker inside and at some point it gets pitch dark. As you climb the stairs, you can see a hope of light that will guide you to the peak. Initially there are iron stairs, then comes the rock ones and finishes with iron stairs. It hardly takes 20 minutes to climb it. But the darkness and the foul smell inside due to the presence of bats makes it a thrilling experience. You can start hearing the sound of bats once you are midway.

Once you are on top, you can relax and enjoy the view around the hills. One can spot the bridge connecting to the other hill. The twin hill does not have anything in particular but a 360 degree view of the surroundings. It will make you to climb rocks and trees to get to that spot. The temple at the top of the first hill can be spotted from this place.

You can find your way back through the bridge to the first hill and the rock stairs will take you to the temple complex at the peak. There is Shiva shrine at the top surrounded by other small shrines. The top gives you a panoramic view of the surroundings.
